Gravy (3/29/20) is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet… this gentle soul only wants to be loved and know that he is safe. He is a lab/black mouth cur mix weighing around 50 pounds. His background story is similar to so many other dogs that Pet Search has rescued from St Thomas.
Gravy was found Thanksgiving morning tied to the entry gate of the shelter. He was discovered by another dog on a morning walk because the owner (s) hid him in the bushes. His teeth have been ground down and has a piece of his tongue missing. Pet Search suspects that he was possibly used as a bait dog on the island. He had severe allergies, and he was scheduled for euthanization. Gravy had been in two foster homes for short periods of time while in St Thomas to get him out of a kennel environment to lessen his anxiety and did very well.
Since arriving on a transport and being in a Pet Search foster home, we have learned a lot about Gravy and his personal needs. We immediately switched his food to non chicken and overnight his skin began to look better and his continuous scratching subsided. He is presently eating Purina One lamb and rice for sensitive skin. His vet visit confirmed he has food allergies and will need dental work in the future which will be coveted by Pet Search.
Gravy is heartworm positive and has a heart murmur due to lack of heartworm preventative while on St Thomas. Gravy has started his heartworm treatment which is fully covered by Pet Search and is on Simparica trio.
Despite the lack of love and health care while in St Thomas, Gravy’s gentle spirit and loving nature shines through. He is good with both dogs and cats and loves kids. He is housebroken, crate trained , walks well on a leash and travels well in a car. Gravy lives for snuggles, kisses on his forehead and bedtime treats! His anxiety now is nonexistent.
Each day we see improvements not only with his skin, but also in his temperament. We see tail wags… happy wiggles…body language that shows that he is comfortable…love in his eyes…hope for a family of his very own.
